The Science Behind Breathing
Noisy and deep breathing of an asthmatic had always been considered an outcome of the disease. Nobody could even suspect that "deep breathing" was the cause of bronchial asthma, and increased depth of breathing could provoke the appearance of the symptoms of the disease.K P Buteyko MD
Prolonged hyperventilation (for more than 24 hours) seems to sensitize the brain, leading to a more prolonged hyperventilation.Demeter, S. L., & Cordasco, E. M. (1986). Hyperventilation syndrome and asthma. The American Journal of Medicine, 81(6), 989–994. doi: 10.1016/0002-9343(86)90393-1
Buteyko Breathing Technique was found to be significantly effective in improving the respiratory physiological parameters among patients with bronchial asthma.Huidrom K. et al, 2016, Effectiveness of Buteyko breathing technique on respiratory physiological parameters among patients with bronchial asthma, International Journal of Recent Scientific Research, Vol. 7, Issue 5, pp. 11328-11331.
How Breathe Buteyko has helped
Before the Breathe Buteyko course, I was walking toward a cliff edge with my health. I couldn’t get up a flight of stairs without being completely breathlessness, my blood pressure medication was increasing and my sleep quality was just awful. I couldn’t believe the simple changes to my breathing would have such profound results.Helen, 45
For someone that has anxiety, reducing my breathing and changing my lifelong breathing habits made me feel uncomfortable at times but Daniel was fantastic at guiding me through not just the exercises, but the principles behind correct breathing and making me feel at ease – I highly recommend!John, 52
I wanted to do the Breathe Buteyko course to improve my sleep quality as I’ve suffered from sleep apnea and snoring for many years, but I have also lost so much weight which was totally unexpected. I have much more energy throughout the day and I no longer have morning grogginess.Rachel, 31
